Review : Royal Navy submariner sweater - almost
The sweater is based on the original issued to the crews of HM Submarines and adopted, due to its immense utility, by many officers and men serving in other branches of Royal Navy during WW2 and the immediate post-war period. Compared to Orvis' copy, the RN original was made of wool, with a significantly longer and more tightly woven neck tube, and longer waist and wrist ribbing. The wool was fairly coarse and "scratchy" but, after a few washings, became softer and less irritating. It also changed colour from a very light ivory to pure white.
The Orvis ivory version is true to size, and offers a fairly decent copy of the RN rollie (from "roll neck," which is how this type of sweater is called on the other side of Atlantic.) However, the sweater is made of cotton instead of wool. Also, compared to the original, it is bulkier, with roomier chest, and feels softer when "out of the box" and donned for the first time.
